The safety factor describes the type test, and it is a design margin rather than an operating allowance. An 8:1 bag rated at 1,000 kg SWL has demonstrated that its design can carry 8,000 kg in the cyclic top lift test. In service it must never be filled beyond 1,000 kg.

Technical details

Rating and testing. ISO 21898 defines the safety factor as the ratio between the final load in the cyclic top lift test and the SWL. For the 8:1 class, the filled bag is put through repeated lift cycles and then taken to eight times its SWL without failure of the body fabric or the lifting system. Type test reports are issued in the name of the manufacturing factory and should be requested with every quotation.

Safe working load. SF 8:1 designs are commonly rated between 500 kg and 2,000 kg SWL. Ratings outside this range can be produced against specific requirements.

Fabric. The body is woven polypropylene, cut heavier than single-trip designs. Expect body fabric of roughly 200 gsm or more, with the exact weight depending on the SWL and the bag geometry. Read the figure off the factory specification sheet rather than assuming a standard weight. UV stabilisation matters more in this class than in single-trip bags, because the bag will spend far longer in service and often outdoors.

Lifting loops and seams. Loops use heavier webbing with longer overlaps into the body, and seams carry reinforced stitching. Loop condition is the single most important inspection point across the life of the bag, since lifting is where fatigue accumulates fastest.

Configuration options. The 8:1 rating is compatible with the usual FIBC configurations: coated or uncoated fabric, filling spouts or open tops, discharge spouts or plain bases, baffles for a square filled shape, dust-proof seams, document pockets and inner liners. The duty class defines the strength of the construction, and the configuration is then built around your product and your filling line.

Labelling. Like every FIBC, an 8:1 bag must carry a durable safety label showing the SWL and safety factor alongside the other markings required by ISO 21898. If a bag offered as heavy-duty reusable does not state SF 8:1 on its label, treat that as a red flag.

What SF 8:1 bags are suitable for

The economics of an 8:1 bag depend on the bag coming back. It earns its higher unit price by spreading that price across many trips, so the natural fit is any operation where bags are emptied at a known point and returned to the filling point.

Typical applications include:

  • Closed-loop movements between plants, such as intermediates shuttling between two processing sites
  • Mining and minerals, including ores and concentrates
  • Aggregates, sand and construction materials moving between depots and sites
  • Cement and dry building products in returnable logistics schemes
  • Non-hazardous chemicals, polymers and resins moving between production and compounding
  • Fertilisers and industrial salts in repeat distribution loops
  • In-plant handling and intermediate storage, where one bag may be lifted dozens of times between process steps

The class also suits operations with high handling intensity even over few trips. If every trip involves many lift cycles or rough forklift handling, the 8:1 margin buys resilience that a 5:1 bag was never designed to provide.

Where 8:1 is the wrong choice

  • Dangerous goods. UN-certified FIBCs for hazardous materials are a separate regime classified by packing group. The 5:1, 6:1 and 8:1 safety factors apply to non-dangerous goods under ISO 21898, so an 8:1 rating is no substitute for UN certification.
  • One-way export flows. If bags will never return to the filling point, the extra fabric is money spent on strength that is discharged into a waste stream after one trip. Specify 5:1 single-trip bags instead.
  • Changing products between fills. A reusable FIBC must be refilled with the same type of contents as its first use. If your product mix rotates, reuse rules will defeat the purpose of the heavier bag.
  • Hygiene-critical food and pharmaceutical flows. Reuse in these sectors demands cleaning and requalification to the site's food safety certification, which is often harder than simply specifying fresh single-trip food-grade bags.

Rules for reusing an SF 8:1 bag

An 8:1 rating is a licence to reuse, and the licence has conditions:

  • Inspect every bag before every refill, starting with the lifting loops and seams, and check the body fabric for abrasion
  • Refill only with the same type of contents as the first use
  • Operate in a closed loop where the history of each bag is known
  • Withdraw any bag showing damage or contamination, and any bag whose fabric has visibly degraded under UV exposure
  • Where a repair is contemplated, it must be carried out under the conditions the standard allows, followed by requalification, and confirmed with the manufacturing factory

No manufacturer can guarantee a fixed number of trips. Trip life is governed by the condition of the bag, and the industry position is that a reusable bag stays in service only while inspection shows it remains fit for purpose.

Choosing between 6:1 and 8:1

Both classes are reusable, so the choice is an economic one. A 6:1 bag carries a lower unit price and suits loops with moderate trip counts and gentle handling. An 8:1 bag costs more per unit yet tends to win on cost per trip when trip counts are high, handling is hard, or the option of structural repair extends the working life of the fleet. The honest way to compare quotations is to divide the landed unit price by a realistic trip count for your loop, and to ask each factory for the fabric weight and loop specification behind the rating.
