Platts PP raffia grade for the Indian sub-continent held at 1375 USD/MT, unchanged for a second consecutive week. The grade has barely moved since the end of September, holding about 6% below April’s 1460 peak and 285 USD/MT above the 1090 low of early July.

Crude, meanwhile, keeps rising. Brent gained 4.98% to 105.50 USD/bbl, a second straight weekly rise that takes it close to its mid-September high of 108. Oil has now added almost 10% in two weeks while raffia has not moved at all.

That disconnect is the story. On the tracker’s normal relationship, a crude move of this size would be pulling resin higher by now. It is not. The pass-through has stalled, which points to polymer supply being ample enough, and downstream demand soft enough, that offers are holding flat regardless of what feedstock does. The mid-September spike to 108 made the same point, and two more weeks of firm crude have confirmed it.

Freight has eased again. Drewry’s World Container Index fell 2% to 4,351 USD per forty-foot container on 08 October, a second weekly decline as factory closures for China’s Golden Week thinned volumes. The index is now about 6% below its July peak. Carriers are pushing rate increases for the second half of October, so the dip may prove seasonal rather than the start of a sustained fall.

The read ahead is that resin looks pinned near 1375 regardless of crude’s direction. If oil keeps climbing, the muted pass-through means resin may gain little. If oil turns down, the soft polymer backdrop would give offers room to ease. Either way, the strong link to crude that drove the summer recovery is not operating at present.

For buyers this is a favorable disconnect. Oil near a two-month high would normally be feeding into higher resin offers, and it is not. Freight has softened with the Chinese holiday on top of that, so delivered cost has held flat near its cycle high rather than climbing with crude. The pressure to buy ahead of a feedstock-driven rise has lifted for now, though the gap could close quickly if polymer supply tightens. It remains worth confirming which resin position a quote is built on and how long the freight component holds.
