Platts PP raffia grade for the Indian sub-continent rose 55 USD/MT to 1430 (+4.00%), its sharpest weekly gain since the summer and the move that ends three weeks pinned at 1375. The grade is now within about 2% of April’s 1460 peak and 340 USD/MT above the 1090 low of early July.
This is the catch-up the gap had been pointing to. Crude did little this week, with Brent up just 0.92% to 109.75 USD/bbl, yet resin moved hard. After three weeks of rising feedstock and flat offers, the squeeze on producer margins has resolved the way these usually do, through a delayed step up in resin rather than a retreat in oil. Raffia at 1430 is now broadly in line with crude near 110, so most of the gap has closed in a single week.
Freight is climbing alongside it. Drewry’s World Container Index rose 2% to 4,585 USD per forty-foot container on 22 October, a second straight weekly gain and its highest in fifteen weeks, on firmer Asia-Europe and Transpacific rates as carriers push late-October increases through. The index is now close to its July peak, so the brief Golden Week dip is behind the market and shipping is adding to landed cost again.
The read ahead is that resin and crude are moving together once more. With the gap closed, further gains in offers would need crude to push above 110 towards its spring highs, while a drop in oil would now pull resin back rather than leaving it stranded. The month-long disconnect that insulated buyers has ended, and the normal feedstock link is back in control.
