Platts PP raffia grade for the Indian sub-continent edged up 10 USD/MT to 1440 (+0.70%), a small gain that takes it within about 1.5% of April’s 1460 peak and 350 USD/MT above the 1090 low of early July. After last week’s sharp catch-up, the climb has all but run its course.
The notable shift is underneath. Both of the inputs that drove resin higher have turned down this week. Brent fell 5.24% to 104.00 USD/bbl, its first meaningful decline in over a month, and Drewry’s World Container Index dropped 3% to 4,429 USD per forty-foot container on 29 October as Transpacific rates slid. Resin ticked up while its two cost drivers eased, which is the lag finishing its work. The small rise reflects the crude strength of a fortnight ago rather than this week’s softer oil.
That sets up a change in direction. With crude off its high and freight turning down. Raffia at 1440 is near the top of what crude at 104 would support, so if oil keeps easing, offers should start to soften over the coming weeks on the usual delay. The autumn recovery, which added about 32% off the July low, looks to have peaked.
The caution is that one week does not make a trend. Brent has dipped and recovered twice through this cycle, so a single 5% fall is not yet a confirmed turn. If crude steadies near 104, resin would likely hold around 1440 instead of easing. The signal to watch is whether oil’s decline extends into next week.
