THE INDUSTRY'S PACKAGING CHALLENGE

Seeds and fertilizers share a bag but have different failure modes — and a specification that works for one can be wrong for the other. Seeds need protection from moisture (which triggers premature germination), UV exposure (which degrades seed viability), and contamination from chemical residues or other seed varieties. Fertilizers — particularly compound fertilizers like NPK, DAP, and urea — have their own risks: moisture causes caking and clumping that reduces product value and flowability, and certain fertilizer chemistries are reactive to liner materials that work fine for seeds.

For distributors supplying the agricultural sector, the practical consequence is that a single "agricultural bag" doesn't exist. The bag for premium seed packaging and the bag for NPK fertilizer need different specifications — and using the same bag for both usually means the specification is wrong for at least one of them.

WHAT'S TYPICALLY PACKED

Seeds, crops and fertilizer applications India Pack supplies bags for include:

  • Cereal seeds (wheat, barley, oat, maize)
  • Vegetable and oilseed varieties
  • Grass seed
  • Pulse seeds (pea, bean, lentil)
  • NPK compound fertilizer
  • Urea
  • DAP (diammonium phosphate)
  • MAP (monoammonium phosphate)
  • Agricultural lime
  • Grain crops (wheat, maize, barley — for storage and transit)
  • Dried pulses (for storage)
  • Others

RECOMMENDED BAG TYPES FOR THIS INDUSTRY

UV-Stabilised Standard FIBC — primary recommendation for seeds and grain crops

UV stabilisation is the most important bag specification for seeds and grain crops intended for outdoor storage or transit. Seeds staged in fields, farm yards, or agricultural depots before collection are exposed to UV that degrades standard PP fabric over time — reducing tensile strength and potentially contaminating the material. UV-stabilised fabric maintains integrity across the outdoor dwell times typical of agricultural operations.

Coated FIBC with PE Liner — for fertilizers

For NPK, urea, DAP, and similar compound fertilizers, moisture ingress is the primary risk. A PE-coated outer fabric combined with an inner PE liner provides two moisture barriers. The liner also serves as a chemical barrier between the fertilizer and the PP fabric. Confirm liner material compatibility with the specific fertilizer grade being packed — not all liner grades suit all fertilizer chemistries.

Seed FIBC (Two-Loop) — for seed-specific applications

For premium seed applications where two-loop lifting suits the handling equipment and reduced cost is a consideration, a two-loop seed bag offers a lightweight, lower-cost option. Commonly used for seeds handled by telehandler or where fork-pocket pallet handling is the standard.

INDUSTRY-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

UV stabilisation for outdoor storage — the default for agricultural applications

The majority of agricultural bags are stored outside for some part of their lifecycle — whether at farm level, in a co-operative's open storage, or on the loading dock of a fertilizer depot. UV-stabilised fabric is the standard specification for this sector. For markets with high UV intensity or extended outdoor storage periods, confirm the UV treatment specification with the factory — UV stabilisation is not a binary yes/no and different treatment levels suit different conditions.

Moisture protection for seeds

Moisture is the primary enemy of seed viability. Even low levels of moisture uptake during storage or transit can trigger premature germination or reduce germination rates at sowing. For premium and treated seed, the moisture barrier specification of the bag and liner should be confirmed against the seed type's moisture sensitivity and the expected transit duration. Inner PE liner is standard for most seed applications.

Moisture protection for fertilizers

Fertilizer caking caused by moisture uptake is a product quality and handling problem. A caked fertilizer that no longer flows freely through spreading equipment is commercially damaged. The coated fabric plus inner liner combination is the standard moisture protection for compound fertilizers. Confirm that the liner material is compatible with the specific fertilizer chemistry — certain reactive fertilizer grades require a liner specification beyond standard PE.

Fertilizer DG classification check

Most common agricultural fertilizers (NPK, urea, DAP) are non-classified for dangerous goods transport purposes. However, certain high-nitrogen fertilizers and speciality grades may fall under DG classification depending on nitrogen content and formulation. Confirm the DG status of your specific fertilizer grade before specifying a bag — if DG classification applies, a UN-certified bag is required. [VERIFY DG classification status of any fertilizer grades your clients supply]

Contamination prevention for seeds

Premium and certified seed is commercially damaged by cross-contamination from other seed varieties or chemical residues. For seed applications, confirm that the factory operates clean production lines with documented changeover procedures between seed types. This is a factory hygiene and process question, not just a material question.

HOW INDIA PACK SERVES THE SEEDS, CROPS & FERTILIZERS INDUSTRY

Seeds and fertilizer applications often arrive to us with a basic spec — "UV bag with liner" — that needs refining before it's right. We establish the specific material, the storage and transit conditions, the liner compatibility requirement, and any DG classification before recommending a construction.

For seed applications where contamination risk is a concern, we confirm factory hygiene and changeover documentation with the facility before recommending it. For fertilizer applications, we confirm liner chemistry compatibility with the product. The specification and the factory are chosen together — not separately.

Supplier certifications relevant to your order — factories building to ISO 21898, plus additional documentation on request — are obtained and documented for you as part of every shipment.

Our Single Loop and Two Loop Bags with transparent windows make product identification quick and convenient, helping customers easily distinguish between different products in your portfolio.

FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

A UV-stabilised standard FIBC with an inner PE liner is the starting point for most seed applications. UV stabilisation protects the bag fabric during outdoor storage and transit; the PE liner provides a moisture barrier that protects seed viability. For premium or treated seed where contamination risk is a priority, factory hygiene documentation and changeover procedures are as important as the bag specification. For seed applications using two-loop telehandler handling, a two-loop seed bag is a lower-cost alternative to a standard 4-loop FIBC. Share your seed type, storage conditions, and handling method and we'll confirm the right specification.

Most common agricultural fertilizers — NPK, urea, DAP, MAP — are not classified as dangerous goods for transport purposes, and standard FIBC construction applies. The supplying factories build to ISO 21898, the design and testing standard for industrial FIBCs. Where a fertilizer grade falls under DG classification (certain high-nitrogen or speciality grades), a UN-certified bag is required — confirm the DG status of your product before ordering. Supplier certifications relevant to your order are obtained and documented by India Pack as part of every shipment.

MOQ depends on how the shipment is structured. For a standalone LCL (less-than-container-load) shipment, the minimum is [CONFIRM: LCL MOQ] bags. If you're building a larger order, a 20ft or 40ft FCL combining multiple bag specifications, MOQ can be as low as [CONFIRM: per-spec FCL MOQ] bags for any single specification within that container. If you're not sure which structure suits your volume, tell us what you need and we'll advise the most cost-effective option.

Plan for [CONFIRM: total lead time, order confirmation to destination port] depending on where you're importing to. Production runs [CONFIRM: ex-factory lead time — reconcile with product pages, which currently state 3–4 weeks] from confirmation to dispatch, with inland and sea freight on top depending on your route. Lead times start once commercials are finalised and your specifications are confirmed with the factory, not from the date of enquiry. If you're working to a deadline, tell us your required arrival date at the outset and we'll confirm whether it's achievable and what needs to happen when.
